I would not normally consider Bella Swann a hero. She is most of the time weak minded and just very plain. It is never mentioned of her ever having any particular talents. The one that is mentioned isn't until the end of the book. However, her heroism shines through in her pregnancy. I do think she is incredibly brave in this aspect of her character. Even though she is weak, in pain, and literally dying, she still holds on and loves her baby. All throughout the book Edward tells her what to do. He controls her happiness. When Edward wants to get rid of the baby, Bella fights him and tells him no. It takes a lot of strength to stand up to someone you love. Bella does this wonderfully. These novels overall portray women as weak-minded individuals that need a man. However, in this moment, the true intuition kicks in. A woman's love for her child is a bond unmatched by any. This novel absolutely nails this fact. The bond Bella has with her baby is incredible and she is willing to do whatever to keep it alive. She drinks blood as a human and literally offers up her body to be fed upon for the survival of her child. She may have never been cut out to be a vampire but being a mother was definitely her calling. In this, she finds her own form of a hero.

I've thought about this a lot too, and I completely agree. I actually never thought about Bella's bond with Renesmee but the way you put it makes complete sense and I agree. She was willing to give up her life for her child-the same way that most mothers would act if their child was in danger of any kind. Meyer does a great job of portraying this.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Bella plays a very weak character, however I believe this was done on purpose and we see this happen in many other stories. For instance the Hunger Games, but Katniss plays the role of a strong character which leads the book to its end. I feel that Bellas weak character is meant for this as well, towards the end we see Bella mature into her new life, and she is no longer weak. In the Hunger Games, towards the end Katniss is relatively weaker when her and Peeta end up together and married with kids, something she said she’d never do.
