What They Lack

Though the Twilight Saga focuses on the characters of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan, does anyone else wonder what a story about any of the other couples would have been like? Despite their importance in the series, Edward may be perfect, but his character lacks depth and Bella is simply plain and uninteresting. To be honest, I somewhat equate Edward with a moody stalker going through puberty, but hey, I guess it's whatever gets the blood flowing...(pun absolutely intended). All of the other characters in the Cullen family have much more interesting back-stories that Stephanie Meyer could have elaborated on. Take for instance, Carlisle and Esme. Their love story sounds much more interesting when you take into account the drama of Esme's abusive past and Carlisle's finally finding love after nearly three centuries. Many more elements could have been explored had she chose the two coven leaders, but Meyer seems to have chosen the two most basic types of characters on the planet: A plain Jane falling for "perfect" teenage boy to form a story about a type of forbidden love with a bunch of overactive hormones involved. It's been written countless times. Even Jasper, with his southern charm, paired with Alice's playfulness or Emmett and Rosalie's arguing and banter would have made a more entertaining story.

Meyer's use of so many characters without developing them with enough depth sort of make them fade into the background. They become somewhat pointless and act as nothing more than a placeholder family that serves no real purpose. Her story could have been a tad bit better had she given fans the opportunity to latch onto another couple. It isn't really until Eclipse that the rest of the family gets mentioned enough to get noticed and New Moon you really can't include at all because when Edward left Bella to wither away, the entire family disappears at once. So what was the point? Perhaps if two other characters had been the focal point and been written by a more seasoned author the outcome would have been different, but Twilight is what it is and its shelf life seems to be eternal. But one can hope.

  1. I agree that all of the other characters relationships sound more interesting and those should have been more prominent, unless they will be brought to light more in the future.
