The Twilight saga is supposed to portray the life of the everyday, average teenager. The thing about Bella though is she is below average. She is absolutely the plainest teen I have ever read about. If it wasn't for the mere fact that Edward couldn't read her mind, he would of had absolutely no interest in her. Most teens have hobbys, or interests. She never mentions anything about either of those. However, maybe it's not Bella's fault. Maybe it is Meyer's fault for not creating a more dimensional character. The only thing Bella ever shows interest in is the boys in her life and her obsession with becoming a vampire. Also, never in any of the novels does it relate to any real issues in an adolesent's life. For example, most teens struggle with the desire to fit in, but not Bella. Even though Bella has no personality and is not even remotely described as pretty, everybody wants to be her friend. She is quiet and awkward, but somehow people just flock to her. There is also no sign of peer pressure or questionable morals. Most teens struggle with these issues. Whether they give in to the everyday pressures or not, it is still a struggle. Meyer did not aknowledge this at all. The more I read this book the less relatable it becomes.

This is so true and I never thought about it this way. Bella is really so boring. I never really enjoyed her character from the beginning and not necessarily just her character but just her personality is so plain. Maybe it was different for me because I saw the movies first before reading the books but in the movie Kirsten Stewart is just such a terrible actress and maybe that ruined it for me before I even began reading.
ReplyDeleteIt's true that Bella is plain and she isn't like most teens, but you have to remember that this is fiction. She may not be relatable but neither are Jacob and Edward...they are vampires and werewolves. This point of this story isn't to relate to the characters but to tell a love story and just be entertaining. Not all books are meant to relate to their audiences and it would almost be boring if they did. This just gives you a different perspective if life were fiction.
